SMUSD Independent Study Program

Independent Study, 2021-22 legislation under Assembly Bill 130 expired on June 30, 2022 without extension or renewal. Assembly Bill 181 confirms that the requirement to offer independent study under AB130 was for the 2021-22 school year only.

For the 2022-23 school year and beyond, San Marino Unified will continue to offer the "traditional" independent study program for students who are unable to attend school in-person due to exposure to, or infections with, COVID-19, pursuant with local or state public health.

Students with exceptional needs may participate in traditional independent study if their individualized educational programs (IEP) specifically provide for such instruction.

~ For students participating in independent study for less than 15 days, written learning agreements must be signed and obtained within 10 school days of the first day of enrollment in independent study.

~ For students participating in independent study for more than 14 days, written learning agreements must be signed and obtained before the start of independent study.

* Approval for traditional independent study is granted by the school administration.

*Requests for independent study should be directed to the school office / administration.
