Important Notice Regarding Safety Incident at Huntington and Valentine Schools

Dear SMUSD Parents and Guardians,

This afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m., Huntington Middle School received a threatening phone call. In response, school staff immediately contacted 911. Out of an abundance of caution, and in accordance with our established safety protocols, we initiated a lockdown at Huntington Middle School, Valentine Elementary School, and the District Office.

As Superintendent, I remained in direct communication with site administration to ensure that all emergency procedures were followed with fidelity. Once law enforcement arrived on scene and conducted an initial assessment, it was determined that students should be evacuated and ultimately dismissed for the remainder of the day.

Throughout the incident, we closely monitored communications being sent to families through ParentSquare by site administration and shared information as it became available to us in real time. During fast-moving situations such as this, information can evolve rapidly. In fact, multiple and sometimes conflicting accounts of the phone call were relayed during the initial stages of the response. It is critically important that the District refrain from disseminating unverified or incomplete information, particularly details that cannot later be retracted. Our obligation is to ensure that all communications are accurate, responsible, and do not compromise student safety or law enforcement efforts.

There is currently an active police investigation underway. Because of this, we are not permitted to share specific details about the content of the call, the identity of the individual involved (if known), or any investigative leads. Sharing such information could jeopardize the integrity of the investigation, interfere with due process, or unintentionally contribute to the spread of misinformation. We appreciate your understanding as law enforcement conducts its work.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities. I am proud of the swift, calm, and professional manner in which our administrators, faculty, and staff implemented safety protocols. Their actions reflect the preparation and commitment that exist across our District.

I recognize that incidents of this nature can be deeply stressful for students and families. Counseling services will be available at our schools for any student who may need additional support. If your child left personal belongings on campus today, Principal Hazlett will be on site tomorrow morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. to assist.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and continued partnership as we work to ensure the safety of our school community.

Sincerely,

Superintendent
San Marino Unified School District
