Green and Sustainable Schools Program

The following is a review of the environmental and energy efficient measures we have taken to keep our schools green, safe and healthy.

Our objectives are as follows:

·       Provide toxic free environment

·       Create green and healthy spaces

·       Use sustainable energy efficient resources

·       Promote Green awareness

Over the last few years we have implemented many procedures to reduce our dependency on environmentally unfriendly                                              chemicals and work practices. We have incorporated, at both the planning and operational levels, strategies to avail ourselves of and explore energy efficient technologies.

Structures

Recent renovations throughout the District involved the use of construction materials that were energy efficient and free of toxic components in compliance with the most rigorous state and federal guidelines. Lead paint and asbestos have been eliminated. Heat reflective and insulated roofing materials were installed.  Energy efficient, weatherized doors and windows have been installed in all the new buildings. Tinted glass was utilized where appropriate. Water efficient faucets and fixtures were installed in restrooms.

Grounds

The grounds were landscaped with hardy, evergreen shrubs and trees that minimized watering requirements while providing aesthetically pleasing and comfortable environments.

Highly efficient irrigation controls have been installed in most locations to tightly control water usage.

Playing fields irrigation systems are zoned and timed to reduce water usage.

Lighting

We have eliminated T12 bulbs and replaced them with efficient T8 and T5 fluorescent bulbs. We have replaced magnetic (PCB- containing) ballasts with electronic ballasts. We have installed occupancy sensors in every classroom. Exterior lighting at all sites is timer controlled. Exit signs have been changed from incandescent to LED bulbs. Other energy saving technologies are being explored.

HVAC

All inefficient boilers and air conditioning units have been replaced by new systems which meet or exceed stringent AQMD emissions standards and greatly reduce greenhouse gases. Programmable thermostats have been installed.  A district wide climate control/energy management system has been implemented with computer based controls to tightly schedule HVAC use and turn off equipment when not in use.

Green Cleaning

All hazardous cleaning materials (bleach based) have been eliminated.  All chemicals are monitored for compliance with environmental standards and MSDS records kept on file. Green cleaning work shops are held to integrate green products and work practices into the standard cleaning program.

Injury Illness Prevention Program(IIPP)

Comprehensive health and safety program implemented (updated and reviewed every year). This includes training in, and developing awareness of safety hazards in the workplace and at the schools (both physical and environmental).

Integrated Pest Management Program (IPMP)

The District has eliminated the use of pesticides in all buildings. The program includes the long-term prevention of pest problems through a combination of techniques using knowledge of pest biology and non-chemical practices in controlling both pests and weeds.

Food Services

Carbonated beverages have been eliminated. Only whole wheat products are provided. Deep frying emissions have been eliminated.  Packaging reduction strategies are being implemented. Healthy vegetable and fruit based meals are served.

Technology

CRT computer monitors are being phased out and replaced with LCD monitors. All obsolete and used computer and electronic equipment is disposed of through recycling operations.

Waste Disposal

District trash is disposed of through a single source city contract. All waste is sorted at their plant and recyclables extracted. All chemicals, paints and oils are disposed of by certified hazardous waste operators and recyclers. All scrap metals generated through construction and maintenance activities are recycled and proceeds used to sponsor Training/Health and Safety events for classified staff. Each school site has individual recycling mini-programs for various fund raising efforts including aluminum and plastic containers and paper products.

UPDATE

Plumbing

We have retrofitted the flush valves on urinals and toilets throughout the District. A typical flush is 4.5 gallons per flush (gpf) the new ones are 1.6 gpf thereby conserving a considerable amount of water.

Swimming Pool

We are installing an insulating cover with enhanced operating features to minimize difficulty in roll out to ensure optimum use. This will greatly enhance heat retention and increase energy efficiency.

Electronic Waste

An electronic waste collection event is being held on December 6, 2008 at Huntington Middle School, north parking lot, which will benefit San Marino Unified School District and will recycle old electronic equipment and waste.
