(San Marino, CA, July 2026) - San Marino High School student Jasmine Zhang was among just 877 students nationwide recognized at the 2026 Congressional Award Gold Medal Summit in Washington, D.C., for her outstanding commitment to voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition and exploration.
An incoming senior at San Marino High School, Zhang dedicated more than four years and over 800 hours toward earning the Congressional Award Gold Medal, the highest honor presented by the United States Congress to young people for initiative, service, and achievement.
Zhang's service journey began with volunteering at the Los Angeles Art Show and grew into organizing charitable art events that support nonprofit organizations, including relief efforts following the Altadena wildfires. This year, she was also selected as an American Heart Association Teen of Impact, leading awareness and fundraising efforts for cardiovascular research.
To fulfill the program's physical fitness requirement, Zhang trained in snowboarding with coaches and traveled to mountains and resorts to further develop her skills. For personal development, she studied French through Duolingo while continuing her training in piano and guitar. She also independently planned and executed multi-day expeditions and nonprofit events, managing all research, logistics, and itineraries.
“The experience pushed me outside my comfort zone, strengthened my leadership and time-management skills, and allowed me to try things that I wouldn't have previously spent time on,” said Zhang. “Most importantly, it encouraged me to pursue lifelong learning and experimentation.”
During the Gold Medal Summit, Zhang received her medal at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center from members of The Congressional Award Foundation's Board of Directors. She also participated in leadership and career development programs, connected with fellow Gold Medalists from across the country, and met with elected officials on Capitol Hill.
