You may be aware of the four confirmed cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, in a neighboring school district. We want to reassure our community that there are currently no confirmed cases of the illness at our schools.
We are committed to supporting the well-being and health of our students and staff and are sharing the following guidance to help keep our community informed.
About Whooping Cough
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory tract. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms often begin like a common cold and can progress to severe coughing fits. It can be more concerning for infants and individuals with underlying health conditions.
For more information, please visit the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health:

How families can help prevent the spread
- Monitor symptoms: Keep your child home if they develop a persistent or worsening cough and consult your healthcare provider.
- Report cases: If your healthcare provider suspects or confirms pertussis, please notify your school’s health office promptly.
- Stay up to date on vaccinations: Ensure your child is current on pertussis vaccines (DTaP for younger children, Tdap booster for pre-teens and adults).
San Marino Unified School District will continue to closely monitor the situation and follow guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Our District Nurse, health aides, and schools will also remain attentive and watch for any unusual increases in illness.
We appreciate your partnership in helping keep our schools healthy.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our District Nurse, Roslyn Nott.
