Developer Fees
Section 17620 of the California Education Code allows school districts to collect fees on new residential and commercial construction within their boundaries. Currently, San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD) charges $4.79 per square foot for residential development and $0.78 per square foot for commercial or industrial development.
These fees help fund the construction or renovation of school facilities needed due to the impact of new developments.
Within the City of San Marino
For properties within the City of San Marino, developer fees are calculated AND collected/paid directly through the San Marino Community Development Division located at the City of San Marino City Hall, 2200 Huntington Drive, San Marino, CA 91108.
Unincorporated Areas of Pasadena and San Gabriel
For properties within SMUSD boundaries in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County (such as parts of Pasadena and San Gabriel), owners should first contact the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Building and Safety Division at 125 South Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA 91007, or call (626) 574-0941. The County will provide a Permit Detailed Report and a SMUSD School Impact Fee Calculation Sheet. The owner should bring both documents to the San Marino Unified School District Office, located at 1665 West Drive, San Marino, CA 91108 to schedule an appointment to pay the fee.
