SMUSD Elementary Schools Named as 2018 California Distinguished Schools

The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California elementary schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. The Distinguished Schools Program returned after a three-year break and replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.

Carver Elementary School Principal Dr. Michael Lin said, "Carver School is blessed with outstanding students, innovative teachers, dedicated staff, supportive district personnel, and a very generous community of families that together go above and beyond to making sure that learning happens at a high level for all students. At the root are the people, nurtured by a positive school climate of camaraderie and professionalism, the blooms of which are seen in creative learning environments experienced by all students."

Valentine Elementary School Principal Ms. Colleen Shields added, "We are thrilled to have the hard work and dedication of our fabulous students, incredible staff and supportive parents at both of our schools recognized and honored by the receipt of this prestigious award."

SMUSD Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss stated, "This prestigious honor validates the incredible work we're doing at our elementary schools. I am so proud of our teachers, our support staff, our administrators and of course, our students."

CDE will honor both Carver and Valentine Elementary Schools at the 2018 California School Recognition Program Ceremony on May 3, 2018.
